work experience for young people

Concordia training programme

Farmers and growers have found it increasingly hard to recruit young managers and supervisors. Concordia is now providing help in solving this industry-wide problem by working in partnership with Plumpton College.

Concordia and Plumpton College

Concordia has worked to supply British farmers and growers with a willing and reliable work force for over 60 years. Currently over 12,500 students are provided for the industry. This new scheme is designed to help both the industry and overseas students.

The Concordia Agricultural Bursary Scheme (CABS) was officially launched at Plumpton College in October 2005. Robert Mitchell, Concordia's Chairman explains that this is a new course which enables post graduates to develop the skills they need to become supervisors and managers. The first group of Polish students reported on how challenging and enjoyable they find the course. Employers who sponsor CABS students include top fruit growers, soft fruit specialists, nursery businesses, vegetable producers, cut flower growers, pack houses and research establishments.

Dr Len Norman, past Principal of Sparsholt College, and the Concordia director who designed this scheme, explained how growers and students were consulted to make sure that the course meets their needs. Plumpton College has tailored this flexible course to best cater for the needs of individual students and employers. To gain their UK diploma students will complete assignments in human resource management, industry knowledge and management of resources and business skills. Additional qualifications will relate to their specific employment needs and could include certificates to drive fork lifts or apply pesticides.

Concordia welcomes applications for the next course which starts in July 2006. Students who have completed or are about to complete higher education courses in their own countries should apply with a letter of support from their Concordia employer. Concordia employers with potential students should also contact Concordia.
