work experience for young people
Students & Participants

Concordia offers seasonal work experience throughout the United
Kingdom. Traditionally placements have been offered to students who
have come from Central and Eastern European countries. Places are currently restricted to European Union Nationals. Our Student Worker Education Programme is open to other nationals providing they meet the strict criteria.
Coming on a placement through Concordia allows you to visit the UK in a structured and well organised way. You will also benefit from the support that Concordia can offer you while you are here. Our applicants return home with additional knowledge, experience and a maturity that will be of benefit to them and their universities. You will gain new skills, explore the country and meet people from all over the world. You can also develop a degree of independence, learning to budget your own money and cook for yourself.
Other benefits include:
- The opportunity to improve your English
- A chance to see the UK
- A working holiday from which to return with extra money
- Companionship with students from other countries, and an opportunity to gain a real insight into their country, culture and traditions
- The opportunity to return as supervisors the following year
Scope of Work
Farm Scheme
Participants on our farms scheme will learn more about modern farming techniques and may undertake a certificated training course that will further their careers. They often make lasting friendships.
Farms and holdings vary greatly in size, and therefore in the labour required. The largest may take 100 or more students, while others will need only two or four. Most Concordia farms are heavily reliant upon their student labour, and recognise the need to treat them properly.
Although the main demand is from April to September, there are work opportunities at other times of year, although the demand outside of these months will be limited.
The work available covers the following crops:
- Soft fruit (e.g. strawberries and raspberries) from May to November
- Vegetables and salads throughout the year
- Top fruit (e.g. apples) from August to mid-October
- Protected crops (e.g. cut flowers, vegetables, herbs, pot plants and nursery stock) at any time of year
- Forestry spring and autumn
- Cereal growing
- Livestock husbandry
Concordia is also able to offer some year long work experience for Non-SAWS participants who will be returning to study agriculture or horticulture. This is subject to their university's consent.
UK work placements available
Concordia has placements on farms in the UK starting between now and mid-June. If this is of interest to you and you have working rights in the UK, then please e-mail students@concordia-
ysv.org.uk with your name, date of birth, contact details and the dates you are available.
We regret that if you are a Romanian or Bulgarian national, all our SAWS work cards for 2008 have been allocated and we will not be able to offer you a placement.
